A new center committed to expanding educational, social and economic opportunities has launched thanks to a generous fund from the Charles Koch Foundation and Koch Industries.
With a $25.6 million gift from the Charles Koch Foundation, the Thurgood Marshall College Fund will open the Center for Advancing Opportunity to support students and faculty at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, as well as at other majority institutions. The Center is headquartered in Washington, D.C.
The Center will advance opportunities to students through:
Original Research by supporting faculty at HBCUs to develop research centers around critical issues
Scholarships, by awarding HBCU students with scholarships to pursue careers in education, sociology, economics and criminal justice research and fellows
On-campus programming, meaning supporting HBCU faculty working to bring speakers to schools who are entrepreneurs, educators and economists.
Research and polling, with the hopes of partnering with Gallup to create an opportunity index that will capture real sentiments of individuals living in fragile communities and foster public dialogue and The State of Opportunity in America Forum, which hopes to bring together HBCU researchers, faculty and other national leaders to annual examine findings and develop solutions.
